Staff Bios

Jill Snelgrove


Born in Peterborough, Jill is the owner of Nelms Opticians. Jill is from a long standing optical family and has worked in the industry since she was a teenager, learning the business from the inside out.

Jill earned her BA in Psychology and English Literature from Carleton University in Ottawa. Attending graduate school at Harvard Radcliffe in Cambridge Massachusetts, she earned the Graduate Certificate of Management.

Jill lived in the United States for a number of years, before returning to raise her family here in Peterborough. She has been fortunate to be able to have the most wonderful and interesting group of friends, to travel extensively, as well as to experience the road less travelled. She has two beautiful, intelligent daughters who are her light and joy.

Jill considers herself privileged to work with some very talented people.

Patricia Dunk


Pat is the Office Manager and has been with Nelms since 1998, and is also an Eyewear Consultant. She attended St. Joseph's School of Nursing, and took several courses at Sir Sandford Fleming College. After that she took numerous accounting, human resources, and time management courses and has been an office manager/district manager since 1974. While she has been with Nelms Opticians she took a 2 year hiatus to get her AZ driving license and drove team with her husband across North America.

Born in Ireland, she has four children and 7 grandchildren whom she enjoys spending time with. Her summer passion is boating, reading and wood carving, and in the winter months, she loves to snowmobile, knit, crochet, woodworking and folk art.

As well as managing the day to day business of the company, she will also advise you on what to look for when choosing new eyewear from our latest collections of over 1000 frames.

Brian Larson


Brian is our Optician Manager and has been with the company since 1997. Brian studied sciences and optics at Seneca College in Toronto, and obtained his Optician license at Ryerson College. He has since taken update courses at Georgian College in Barry. He brings a great deal of experience to our company, also being a Board Certified Contact Lens Fitter.

Born in St. Thomas, Ontario his hobbies include fishing, reading, boating, cooking, bird watching, and obtained his Commercial Deep Sea Diving License at the Canadian Underwater Training Centre ship in Toronto.

Brian manages the Optical end of the business specializing in contact lenses and bifocals as well as low vision aids and specialty lenses. He also works with children to obtain the best possible fit and vision correction.



Melissa was born and raised in Hamilton. She has a husband and 2 children that she enjoys spending time with. In 2000 Melissa studied Office Administration at Mohawk College and completed the course in 2002. She is an Eye Wear Consultant who will bring you an honest enthusiastic approach to helping you choose from our latest collections. Her passion is music and taking pictures of scenery.

Lydia Sargeant


Lydia was born in Sharbot Lake, Ontario close to Kingston. She is taking the massage therapy program at Sir Sandford Fleming College, and has worked part time with us since 2007 as an Eyewear Consultant. Her interests include fashion, animals and the arts.

Once through college she would like to open her own clinic. But, in the meantime, we are lucky to have her here to help our fashionista customers choose the latest in fashions at Nelms Opticians.



Terri Ashwin was born in the Toronto area and moved to Peterborough at a young age. She attended Fleming College and has been in the customer service/sales industry for 10+ years. She has a loving husband and 3 boys at home to keep her busy.

As Assistant Manager here at Nelms, and one of our eyewear consultants, Terri's patience, instincts and sincerity will guide you into finding not only what looks great, but the right pair of glasses for you and your lifestyle. Her friendly attitude and keen observations will make you feel right at home, quickly making your shopping experience a positive one.
